NSW public sector marchers are striking for higher wages; the Sydney march kicked off at 10am, with concurrent marches occurring across the state.

An NSW public sector strike will continue as planned tomorrow, despite yesterday’s announcement on a 3% pay rise for public sector employees.

The Public Service Association wants the mandate for all prison officers in NSW to be fully vaccinated to be extended to the entire prison population.

Concern has been voiced about the shedding of 175 jobs from the NSW Department of Communities and Justice, including 20% of welfare oversight staff.

The New South Wales Public Service Commission plans to axe 10 senior roles involved with meeting public sector diversity targets, according to the public sector union.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Treasurer Dominic Perrottet on Wednesday said the decision to freeze wage increases for the next 12 months would ‘protect public service jobs’ amid rising unemployment across the state.

The New South Wales deputy premier and the agriculture minister both say the National Parks and Wildlife Service did not do enough in the lead-up to the bushfire season, but the public sector union says the government has “crippled” the agency with budget cuts and restructuring. 

After New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s post-election cabinet’s first meeting today, it might not convene again for a fortnight.
