Victoria has appointed its first chief engineer to oversee the planning and delivery of the state’s big infrastructure projects.
Dr Collette Burke will take up the role, based within the new expert body Office of Projects Victoria.
She will also provide advice to government on major project design and engineering.
Burke has experience in both the private and public sectors, having been appointed director to the VicTrack Board in 2015. She is currently the managing director of engineering consulting firm Exner Group, and is former national director of the National Association of Women in Construction.
The new chief engineer’s skills and experience will complement the Office of Project Victoria’s advisory board, which has expertise in civil works and building construction, infrastructure policy, legal and architectural expertise, and government process.
Victoria’s infrastructure budget is big — it is investing an average of $10.2 billion a year over the budget and forward estimates.
Burke will also help the government establish a registration system for engineers, ensuring the industry is properly regulated for safety, compliance and competency.
