Minister for the public service and special minister of state Ben Moreton has encouraged local community organisations, charities and citizens to hold events celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

“Community events are an excellent way for Australians to get involved, celebrate and acknowledge such an extraordinary milestone,” Moreton said in a statement last week.

“Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee is an historic occasion, marking 70 years of her reign as the Queen of Australia.”

Kicking off the national jubilee celebrations, which will run from 2-5 June, will be the renaming of Canberra’s Aspen Island in Lake Burley Griffin ‘Queen Elizabeth II Island’. A special beacon will also be lit to mark the occasion of the Queen’s 70th year of reign.

Groups wanting to host a Jubilee event can submit their plans on an official website that will list Australia’s round-ups of events. The minister added that an emblem had been designed for people to promote their Jubilee functions.

“The emblem was designed to mirror the famous Wattle Spray Brooch, which Australia gifted to Her Majesty during her first visit in 1954,” Morton said.

“This is a symbol of Australia’s appreciation of Her Majesty’s unwavering support and service.”

Earlier this month limited edition gold and silver commemorative coins were produced by the Perth Mint and Australia Post released two commemorative stamps in honour of the Jubilee.

“This occasion deserves a fitting acknowledgement encompassing our nation’s unique relationship with our sovereign,” Moreton said.
