The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and TAFE NSW have signed a memorandum of understanding with a view to supporting elite athletes in pursuit of further education and training.
TAFE NSW plans to join the Elite Athlete Education network in a partnership with the AIS to improve athletes’ access to guidance on academic planning, course management and timetabling.
The arrangement will give AIS students a nominated contact person at TAFE NSW, and open doors for those who have been unable to obtain formal skills.
“This partnership cements TAFE NSW as a provider of choice for elite athletes who want flexibility and personalised support to gain employment skills while they compete at the elite level,” NSW minister for skills and tertiary education Geoff Lee said.
Last year the number of AIS athletes seeking professional career advice had more than doubled. Of that group of athletes, about 20% enrolled in a TAFE or university course the AIS said.
“Education and training enable Australian athletes to learn, thrive and contribute to the community during their time in high-performance sport and life afterwards,” AIS CEO Peter Conde said.
