It is mistaken to think democracy is robust enough to survive constant chipping away of its fundamental pillars, writes Stephen Bartos.

Aah … summer.  The wonderful season when sun shines, waves splash, barbeques sizzle and scandals from the year past are forgotten. Or so a government hopes. It is not only the present government: every government with wrongdoing to hide, whether large or trivial, hopes summer will be the season of amnesia.

One scandal from last year ought not, however, go that way: sports rorts.
