Webcast: how to bring ideas to life in the public sector

Innovation is becoming part of business as usual in government, but what’s the best way to make it happen? Tune in Thursday to hear from real teams in federal and state governments about how they have developed staff ideas into innovative projects.

Hosted in Canberra by the Department of Communications and the Arts, and streamed nationally, this Innovation Month event is a unique opportunity to hear from colleagues about transformative projects underway in government today.

The forum will be webstreamed from www.communications.gov.au/webstream from 11am to 12pm AEST, July 14.

Webstream attendees will be able to ask questions via psi@industry.gov.au email using the subject title ‘Question’  or on Twitter to @psinnovate using #question. General comments throughout Innovation Month can be shared with #psinnovate16.

The speakers

Sam Hannah-Rankin, public sector innovation, Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet

Following an inauspicious commercial start as a Masters graduate in Ancient Greek Literature, Sam has designed and delivered new businesses in corporates such as Australia Post, Bendigo Bank and Fairfax Digital, and also worked across the public and private sector as a management consultant in strategy, digital business models and innovation.

Gess Carbone, 90 day change projects, South Australian Department of the Premier and Cabinet

Gess believes in the ideals of the Public Sector as an enabler of social and economic developmen. Her role at Change@SouthAustralia showcases her passion to make a difference and to be an influencer of the change that is needed so that people and communities can prosper.

Gess understands the opportunities and challenges of working within the three tiers of government and the implications and impacts of those relationships. She is a strong advocate for integration and connectivity to maximise outcomes.

She has worked in Government Business Enterprises, Forestry, Corrections, Education, Vocational Education, Health, and Public Sector Reform

Jarrod Emanuel, innovation, trade and investment, ACT Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate

From an academic background consisting of philosophy, cultural studies and fine art, Jarrod began his career in the public service through the ACT Government Graduate Program where he engaged in a number of diverse roles. Since then, Jarrod has been based in Innovate Canberra working on a range of programs and initiatives. Most recently, his work has focused on the Small Business Innovation Partnerships program, which seeks to promote creative solutions and co-design processes through building stronger partnerships between government, business and research institutions.

Phil Webster, DTO program manager, Digital Transformation Office

Phil Webster is a member of the portfolio team at the DTO and lead on the Transformation Program. He has little experience with government but over 20 years in digital, having worked at the UK’s first digital agency and a number of others since then.
