Former chief accountant sets out recipe for new regulator

An appropriately funded regulator for financial reporting and audit could strengthen the focus on financial reporting and audit quality, according to former ASIC chief accountant Doug Niven.

In a personal response to questions on notice published by the parliamentary joint committee on corporations and financial services, Niven lays out the ingredients for a separate regulator.

Niven is currently the chair of the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board, but his response to committee chair Deborah O’Neill is “provided in a personal capacity as a former employee of ASIC”.
