The 39th annual W.S. Lonnie Awards, celebrating annual reporting achievements of government agencies in Western Australia, has seen Main Roads WA make away with a memorial trophy and shield for the second year in a row.
Judges’ comments reveal that Main Roads WA was ahead of the pack in the categories of presentation, structure and reader-friendly layout. The effective integration of a storyline about fostering Aboriginal engagement and participation, as well as the promotion of cultural recognition, also caught the judges’ attention.
“The judges also noted the report was further differentiated to the others for its use of integrated reporting principles and strong focus on sustainability,” a statement from the professional member organisation read.
Fremantle Ports won the Margaret Nadebaum trophy for best GTE annual report, with special commendations awarded to the WA Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, and the WA Police Force.
Last week’s event attracted more than 400 public sector professionals and was co-hosted by IPAA WA president Jenness Gardner and councillor Ian Cowie.
The W.S. Lonnie Awards aim to promote excellence and improve standards of accountability, and encourage clear communication of information to the parliament and the community.
The awards are named after one of the state’s most distinguished mandarins, William Scott Lonnie. Lonnie’s career culminated in his appointment as Premier’s Department undersecretary with the government of 21st WA premier Sir Charles Court.
“The primary vehicle for accountability in the public sector is the way public sector agencies report their performance to parliament and the people of Western Australia,” the statement read.
A total of 23 awards were distributed at the celebration, with the Auditor General and Freemantle Ports topping the pops with three gongs respectively.
Other award recipients from last week included Economic Regulation Authority chief financial officer Kevin Parry, who was recognised with a gong from the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
The best general government sector annual reporter was taken out by the WA Office of the Auditor General.
The awards night was capped off with some insights from judging panel chair Mike Daube.
