Getting better quality politicians involved in decision-making is one of the trigger issues for respondents to a global survey on what can be done to improve democracy.

The US-based Pew Research Centre conducted surveys of more than 30,000 respondents in 24 countries (including Australia) to look at what voters in each jurisdiction thought were the key issues needing attention if democracies were to prosper.

Pew’s report on the survey work done during 2023 was released last week. Respondents across most countries surveyed said the quality and breadth of representation needed to be improved.
