The wheels of bureaucracy turn slowly, and even good policy ideas can take a long time to grease their way to cabinet.

But the government’s speedy response to the COVID-19 pandemic has shown this isn’t always the case.

ANZSOG practice fellow Sally Washington thinks it doesn’t have to be this way.

She thinks we need to modernise policy infrastructure to make sure the best policy advice is reaching the right people in a timely fashion.

“Capability isn’t just about people … I’m trying to see it as a system and present it as a system challenge,” she said.
