Qualifications: La Trobe University (Bachelor of Arts), UNSW (Bachelor of Laws)

Job history: Prior to her career as a bureaucrat, Jones worked as a sponsoring editor for educational and academic titles at McGraw Hill. The AGD boss joined the department from Defence, where she was an associate secretary. She previously served as the Finance deputy secretary for business-enabling services. Jones previously held a senior AGD role as deputy secretary responsible for national security, criminal justice and emergency management. She also led the international crime cooperation division and the social inclusion division, which oversaw policy and programs concerning Indigenous justice, native title, legal assistance and human rights.

Why she made news in the past year: Jones gave an update to the secretaries board in April about the robodebt royal commission, noting at the time the commonwealth had lodged its submission. As part of The Mandarin’s Secretary’s Sticky Notes, she said her 2023 motto for the public service was “drive change, embrace change”.
