The first big set piece of the new government ­– the 2022-23 Budget reset — is done and the Australian Public Service is already into senate estimates season.

The committees resume on Monday after a week away.

Meanwhile, former public service commissioner Andrew Podger has provided a Budget critique of the aces and a few spaces for public sector reform, so we won’t repeat his points here.

The $3.6 billion worth of savings over four years from external labour, advertising, travel and legal expenses will hurt a bit but are sensible.
