The election is over. The Libs are tearing themselves and each other apart. There is serious talk of a Liberal split.
Such a split makes a lot of sense and has ample historical precedents. What was unusual about the past few decades of the major political parties in Australia was not the occasional bout of turmoil or chaos, but the strong underlying stability.
There are good reasons, however, to think the stability is about to end.
In the new federal parliament, the Liberal and National parties will have their smallest share of seats since Robert Menzies founded the Liberal party in 1944.
