A male former staff member of the Australian Embassy in Bangkok has been charged after cameras were found in the women’s bathroom of the government building.
The incident, first reported by the ABC, came to light after an SD card containing images of female staff was found on a bathroom floor last year.
Multiple cameras were found directed at women’s showers and toilets, the broadcaster reported.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed to The Mandarin that a former locally engaged staff member of the embassy was arrested by Royal Thai Police on January 6.
“The welfare and privacy of all staff remains a priority for the department and we continue to provide appropriate support,” a DFAT spokesperson said.
The department declined to comment further while the legal matter was ongoing.
Police confirmed to the ABC that a man had been charged with two offences under sections of the Thai criminal code with a maximum penalty of 10 years’ jail.
Dozens of Australian embassy staff are assisting the Thai police. It is unclear how long the cameras had been in the bathrooms or how much vision had been recorded.
