Politicians from across the political divide have heaped praise on speaker of the house of representatives Tony Smith over recent days. The praise follows Smith’s announcement that he plans to tender his resignation from the role of speaker later this month.

As The Mandarin reported, Smith, who had already announced he will not contest the next election, will step down from the role of speaker on November 22.

Prime minister Scott Morrison reacted to Smith’s resignation, telling the parliament: “I believe that we have had the privilege to serve in the house when we had our finest speaker.”

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese described Smith as an outstanding speaker, saying: “You have been one of the finest examples of parliamentarians of your generation.”

Smith has served as speaker since August 2015.
