Three rooftop solar systems have been gifted to WA charities as part of the state government’s Synergy Community Solar Fund.
Western Australian energy minister Bill Johnston announced the 2021 grant recipients on Monday. Constable Care Foundation in Maylands, Crossways Community Services in Kelmscott, and Directions Disability Support Services in Maddington will each have solar rooftop panels installed on their buildings.
“I’m delighted to announce the state government, through Synergy, is making renewable energy more accessible by gifting rooftop solar systems to community groups,” Johnston said.
The 2021 installations are collectively expected to save the NFPs $11,000 in electricity bills every year.
“The government is committed to supporting not-for-profits and helping them better manage their energy consumption so that they can redirect their savings into benefiting the wider community,” the minister added.
Rooftop solar systems installed for 16 charities in WA since 2018 have delivered over 250 kilowatts of solar power, with a collective energy saving of approximately $81,000.
As part of the fund process, NFP applicants receive a free energy audit and tailored advice about how to maximise the benefits of rooftop solar and how best to manage energy costs. Over 200 energy audits have been conducted since the fund began.
Thornlie MLA Chris Tallentire said the electricity savings would expand the charities’ capacity to reach more people with their essential services.
“Directions Disability Support Services help people in our community to live as well as possible, supporting them with activities of daily living including medication, personal care, attending appointments, as well as improving social and community access and inclusion.
“The savings from rooftop solar will enable improvement and expansion of these life-changing services delivered to the community,” Tallentire said.
