Applications are being invited for state government grants from a pool of $5.9 million to deliver disability advocacy support services from 2022 to mid-2023.
Craig Crawford, seniors and disability services minister, announced the disability advocacy grants on Monday. He said the grants would ensure vital services and support for people living with a disability and their families.
“Through this grants program, people with disability will continue to have a platform to voice their concerns, and access information, specialist advice and support, including capability building,” Crawford said.
“It’s about ensuring people with disability can access the right support to participate fully in our community — socially, culturally and economically.”
According to Crawford, more people are reaching out to disability advocacy services groups to help them speak out, defend their rights and overcome barriers.
“Continuing to invest in advocacy support services will mean the rights and inclusion of people with disability can continue to be promoted and protected,” he added.
The government funding supported its policy to ensure that Queensland was an inclusive state, the minister said, for all people to ‘thrive and reach their full potential.
“The Queensland government is also continuing to work closely with the commonwealth government to understand the drivers of demand for disability advocacy services to inform the longer term approach to ensuring people with disability have access to the advocacy supports they need,” Crawford said.
Applications for the disability advocacy grants can be made online and close on 2 August.
