The Australian Taxation Office, Australia Post, the Defence Science and Technology Group and the Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation have all taken home top gongs for their ‘outstanding success’ in creating safe workplaces.
The organisations were recognised at the 2021 Comcare National Work Health and Safety Awards ceremony on Tuesday.
Comcare CEO Sue Weston told the virtual awards ceremony that the ‘incredible’ achievements of the finalists would also be recognised in person at the 2022 Comcare National Conference.
“It’s important that we celebrate and reward leadership and innovation across our scheme. Achievements like the ones we’re showcasing today can inspire others to prevent and reduce injury and harm in the workplace,” she said.

Prevention Award
Joint winners: The Defence Science and Technology Group, for its Advanced Ordnance Technologies capability, and the ATO, for its COVID-19 response to ensure a safer workplace.
Commendations: The Department of Education, Skills and Employment, for empowering staff to prevent harm during COVID-19, and the ABC, for its SCAN4SAFETY Situational Awareness Tool.
Finalists: The Department of Defence, for its Amphibious Combat and Sealift Systems Program Office, and the Department of Health, for its Virtual Workstation Assessments.
Early Intervention Award
Winner: The Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation, for its SuperYou initiative.
High commendations: Australia Post for its early intervention and injury management initiative, and Rehab Management, for its CheckInToday screening tool.
Recovery at and Return to Work Award
Winner: Australia Post, for its Early Matched Care at Australia Post program.
Finalists: Hearing Australia’s Nadja Popadic, for significantly improving Hearing Australia’s return to work outcomes and claims performance, and EML, for its claims model with the ACT government.
Individual Contribution Award
Winner: Angus Becsi, Australia Post, for successfully transforming employee engagement, safety culture and leadership at the Perth mail and parcel centres.
High commendation: May Webster, APM WorkCare, for her commitment to continuous improvement and passion for mentoring and developing others.
Finalist: Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Deacon, Department of Defence, for his work at the Defence Response Unit within the Australian Defence Force.
