A new police station in Queanbeyan has been officially opened by local state member and NSW deputy premier John Barilaro, who described the facility as a boon for regional infrastructure.
Mr Barilaro attended the unveiling of the $31 million police station, which will serve as police headquarters for the district, alongside minister for police and emergency services David Elliot and police commissioner Mick Fuller.
The new building will accommodate general police duties, specialist, tactical, crime prevention and investigative units, including highway patrol, taskforce and region enforcement squad officers.
In a statement released on Monday, the deputy premier said that properly resourcing NSW police was an investment in the safety of the community.
The ‘very best resources, equipment and a modern work-base’ would continue to protect the region now and into the future, Mr Barilaro said.
Mr Elliot said the new station would set a new standard for regional policing by boosting police resources in the area.
“This state-of-the-art police station is the 33rd police station to be built or upgraded by the NSW Government since 2011 and will ensure communities are well supported by our law enforcement agencies,” Mr Elliot said.
Part of the NSW government’s commitment to local policing includes funding for an additional nine police officers with the Monaro Police District over the next four years. That forms part of a bigger package for 1,500 additional police in NSW until 2024.
