Aged care royal commission releases special COVID-19 report

The aged care royal commission has released a special COVID-19 report based on hearings held between August 10-13 that calls for a national advisory body and plan along with increased funding for visitor support, allied health and infection control expertise, and personal protective equipment.

Commissioners Tony Pagone and Lynelle Briggs found that while the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee has acknowledged the danger of the situation — notably in a March 17 warning to the aged care sector — “it is now clear that the measures implemented by the Australian government on advice from the AHPPC were, in some respects, insufficient to ensure preparedness of the aged care sector.
