NSW developing 2020 cyber security strategy

The New South Wales government is seeking industry feedback on its new cyber security strategy.

The sector-wide 2020 strategy would replace the state’s 2018 cyber security strategy, as well as the NSW Cyber Industry Development Strategy, by combining them into one overarching document.

Customer service minister Victor Dominello on Tuesday said the new strategy would be delivered through an “integrated approach” to tackle cyber threats and protect the state’s information, assets, services, businesses and citizens.

It would be important for the state to maximise its existing capabilities in a post-pandemic world, while also developing the local cyber security industry into a “globally competitive, innovative ecosystem” Dominello noted.

“The 2020 NSW Cyber Security Strategy will address the cyber workforce and skills gaps that are vital in attracting business investment and creating innovation jobs,” he said.

“It will support innovation and growth of the NSW cyber industry and cement NSW as the leading state for cyber security in the Asia-Pacific region.”

Industry partners and cyber security experts can express an interest in providing a submission to the strategy by emailing cyberstrategynsw@customerservice.nsw.gov.au.

Last week Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced the government would facilitate 250,000 square metres of office space in Sydney and provide $48.2 million in funding to create a new technology hub, Tech Central.

The hub would be home to start-ups and scale-ups, with Berejiklian arguing Tech Central would “rival Silicon Valley as the place to be”. Dominello on Tuesday noted cyber security would also be a key part of the Tech Central community.

The state government recently said it would also provide $240 million to boost its cyber security capability as part of a $1.6 billion investment into a digital infrastructure fund, established a cyber taskforce, and set up a Cyber Security Vulnerability Management Centre in Bathurst to be operated by Cyber Security NSW.
