New leaders for WA Conservation Commission

Professor Chris Doepel PSM has been appointed chair of Western Australia’s Conservation and Parks Commission.

He replaces Marion Fulker, who has held the position for the past three years.

Doepel is currently deputy chair, and also chairs the University of Notre Dame’s program and course accreditation committee and undertakes policy work within the division of academic affairs.

Previously he was the registrar and CEO of the National Native Title Tribunal and has extensive experience as a senior manager in public administration. In 2006, he was awarded a public service medal for his native title work.

Jo Lanagan has been appointed deputy chair. Lanagan has over 20 years’ experience in Commonwealth, state government and not-for-profit organisations associated with Aboriginal affairs, and is currently deputy CEO at Central Desert Native Title Services.

They are joined by two new committee members, Tania Donovan and Penny Bond. Donovan has expertise in Aboriginal affairs and is currently working as a heritage officer with the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council. Bond is a law graduate with both private and public sector experience.

The commission’s purpose is to act as an independent and trusted community steward and government advisor for the protection of Western Australia’s biodiversity and conservation reserves while fostering its appreciation and sustainable use.

“Since its establishment in 2016, the commission has built a strong foundation for delivering statutory functions and advocating for the protection of Western Australia’s biodiversity and conservation estate, while fostering its appreciation and sustainable use,” said Environment Minister Stephen Dawson in a statement.

“The seven committee members have significant expertise in their respective fields, and I am confident they will effectively serve Western Australia as members of the commission.”
