Veterans ready to map their next career in public service will have the opportunity to participate in the Queensland government’s first-ever virtual careers fair tailored for veterans on November 21.
Robert Setter, commission chief executive, Queensland Public Service Commission says the virtual careers fair will include representation from 15+ Queensland government departments.
“Veterans will have the chance to learn about Queensland’s largest employer, discover new and diverse career opportunities, and have access to agency leaders and human resource professionals,” Robert said.
“The virtual careers fair enables veterans from across Queensland, including regional and remote locations to participate, helping them to find opportunities in public service.
“The Queensland public sector offers endless career possibilities across more than 4000 locations, from the Torres Strait to the Gold Coast; Mount Isa to Brisbane. With opportunities in healthcare, engineering, information technology, science, police, emergency services and more, the Queensland public sector has many meaningful employment options to offer veterans.
“We also offer great rewards and benefits, including flexible work, competitive salary, employment security, health and wellbeing programs, and career and development opportunities.
“The Queensland Government knows veterans possess some of the most well-regarded, diverse and sought-after skills and experiences in the labour market today.
“We also know that each year approximately 5000 personnel leave the Australian Defence Force, with 1600 of these in Queensland—creating a unique talent pool for employers.
“As Queensland’s largest and most diverse employer, we can take a lead role in supporting veterans in the next phase of their career.
“We are committed to giving veterans a fair chance at employment by providing a pathway into the Queensland public sector workforce. Our goal is retention, not just recruitment. The virtual careers fair supports the Queensland Government’s Veterans’ employment pathway, launched earlier this year, to help veterans find suitable, sustainable and meaningful employment within the Queensland public sector.
It is also the result of a 2017 election commitment to create a 12-month pilot program to identify at least 100 job opportunities for veterans, to run a recruitment campaign targeting veterans, and provide online resources to help veterans match their skills with available roles in the Queensland public sector.
